Moving around the home after a stroke.

The importance of balance and stability whilst moving around the home after a stroke.

Regaining mobility after a stroke is often one of the largest and most critical challenges during rehabilitation. The independence to walk on your own not only leads to a higher quality of life, but also increases the body’s chances for a greater range of recuperation.

Anyone who has a physical disability will usually find that the stairs can potentially be more hazardous after the medical issue occurs. Someone who has, for example, had a stroke may find it harder to move around safely between floors. Whilst walking on flat floors is encouraged by many medical professionals as part of the post stroke rehabilitation, climbing the stairs is not.

Always seek an Occupational Therapist, or an after-care stroke team in your area who may be able to help and advise with care strategies that make it safer and easier for moving around the home post stroke. Please contact the charity Stroke Association for advice, support or guidance here.

Consider these questions when accessing the home after a medical illness like a stroke
  • Is it safe to use the stairs? If there are any balance issues this will not be safe to do so.
  • Difficulty standing safely for a period of time?
  • Are you planning for the long-term? Future-proofing saves money and keeps people in their own home for longer.

A solution to using the stairs…
Here at Bespoke Homelifts we understand that returning home after a stroke can be challenging. We have helped improve the lives of people who have various medical issues by installing a home elevator. It is the latest modern alternative to a stairlift. This not only future proofs your home but gives you a lovely way to travel between floors SAFELY, enabling you to stay in your home for longer.

We have a wide range of home lifts, and they can be adapted to meet all needs, from adding a fold down seat, installing an in-car telephone or maybe bespoke colour coded frame that fits in with the overall design of the home. A home elevator is such a popular option that ensures the home is safe now and in the future for homeowners, carers and visitors. For many of our customers, installing a home lift has meant they can stay in their own home avoiding moving house or transferring to a care home. Some even use the lift to move heavy items between floors like laundry!

Installing a Bespoke homelift has been life changing for many of our customers who for many reasons do not want a clunky stairlift, do not have the space for a stairlift or require a wheelchair, carers or walking aids to be with them when accessing all floors of the home. Some homeowners opt for a home lift as it is more stylish and is a very safe solution.

  • Walking aids can be moved in the lift – always ensuring safety
  • Carers or family can travel in-car at the same time
  • Space for wheelchair access with a carer
  • Can move between up to 3 floors
  • Can be installed almost anywhere, in any room of the house
