Since 1992 the world has celebrated International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), a day to increase an understanding of disability issues and to help raise awareness of the different opportunities that are out there for people with disabilities. According to the World Report on Disability, 15 per cent of the world’s population, or more than 1 billion people, are living with disability. The aim of this day is to ensure that there are opportunities for people with disabilities so they are not left behind, especially in the current climate which has pushed disability issues down the agenda.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, isolation and disrupted routines have greatly impacted the lives and mental well-being of people with disabilities right around the world. This year’s theme is "Building back better: towards an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 world by, for and with persons with disabilities”. It highlights the importance of strengthening our efforts for universal access to essential services, including immediate health. Instead of looking at COVID-19 in just a negative way, the World Health Organisation has used the pandemic to create unique opportunities to build back our health systems so that they are more inclusive and responsive to needs and rights of people experiencing disability in all their diversity.
The key messages that the World Health Organisation is trying to get across are:
• Disability is part of the human experience.
• The World Health Organisation recognises that a world where all people attain the highest possible standard of health and well-being is only possible if health systems are inclusive of people with disability.
• People with disability have been amongst the most vulnerable populations during the current COVID-19 outbreak due to many health, social and environmental barriers, discriminatory attitudes, and inaccessible infrastructure.
• Countries need to shift towards a service delivery system rooted in the communities, reaching out and empowering people with disability.
Here at Bespoke Homelifts we work very closely with people who have a range of different disabilities. Our business is focused on improving the access and mobility of people living with a disability. The installation of a homelift or a through the floor lift has given increased independence to hundreds of customers and opened up their upstairs living space - which was previously inaccessible – for them to fully enjoy.
